I have had the opportunity to work alongside some of the individuals who are making good things happen in Pittsburgh's Northside and Millvale neighborhoods. I have been producing videos that highlight the types outreach these places provide to their residents and documenting the impact of that outreach on these communities through the Pittsburgh Tall project.
Millvale is the first neighborhood to be featured. Millvale, as the name implies, was once a mill town that was a part of the burgh's vibrant manufacturing industry. Those manufacturing days are long gone, and Millvale has had to come to terms with finding a new identity amidst threats of flooding from nearby Ghirty's Run. A big part of finding ways to equitably develop and protect this historic community has been realized through their Ecodistrict project.
The Northside neighborhood has its own unique set of challenges in building entrepreneurship. They established Ignite Northside which helps business owners to grow their businesses and reach out to the community through workshops, mentoring, and connection to business development resources. The Annie O'Neill Photography video is the first in a series that will share the progress and impact of Ignite Northside.
