Pittsburgh Tall Stories - Small Scale Sustainability and Business Incubation

Pittsburgh, PA has been making top 10 lists for the past several years for things like food, tech, and the arts. What makes Pittsburgh so special? From my experience, it's the people and the neighborhoods they live in.

I have had the opportunity to work alongside some of the individuals who are making good things happen in Pittsburgh's Northside and Millvale neighborhoods. I have been producing videos that highlight the types outreach these places provide to their residents and documenting the impact of that outreach on these communities through the Pittsburgh Tall project.

Pittsburgh Tall is run out of the co-op workspace Work Hard Pittsburgh (which I am shamelessly promoting as a member of the co-op) which is home to dozens of professionals from various industries including media, tech, and sustainability. The PGH Tall initiatives include blog posts and videos that help tell and spread the stories of these neighborhoods.

Millvale is the first neighborhood to be featured. Millvale, as the name implies, was once a mill town that was a part of the burgh's vibrant manufacturing industry. Those manufacturing days are long gone, and Millvale has had to come to terms with finding a new identity amidst threats of flooding from nearby Ghirty's Run. A big part of finding ways to equitably develop and protect this historic community has been realized through their Ecodistrict project.
I will not try to explain Ecodistrict in writing as the voices in the posted video tell the story in a very compelling way. I will share with you that Millvale has been able to open a community library, establish the Gardens of Millvale, equip buildings with Solar panels, build stormwater collection gardens, and pave the way for free public wi-fi.

The Northside neighborhood has its own unique set of challenges in building entrepreneurship. They established Ignite Northside which helps business owners to grow their businesses and reach out to the community through workshops, mentoring, and connection to business development resources. The Annie O'Neill Photography video is the first in a series that will share the progress and impact of Ignite Northside.
I look forward to bringing more stories from these neighborhoods to life as they happen. Thank you to Alyse Horn, Josh Lucas, Buzzy Torek, Zaheen Hussain, Ebony McQueen-Harris, and Scott Wolovich for helping to make these projects happen.
